In Toronto alone, along with seven English daily newspapers, there are seven ethnic dailies. Nearby Mississauga boasts 36 ethnic newspapers, including 25 for its South Asian community. One Vancouver estimate tallies about 85 ethnic newspapers; the Calgary Multicultural Centre lists 18 papers. To communicate, Canada’s immigrants reach for a proven technology: newsprint.
“You have a great number of publications. Some weekly, some four times a week. Let’s say, conservatively, that our members, on average, publish 10,000 copies each,” Mr. Saras says. “That’s 6.5-million copies.”
A funny thing has happened to the printed word in Canada on the way to the dustbin of history: it is thriving. There is big news from the small book presses and magazine world, where new titles launch often, but most especially with newspaper readership, which continued to grow this year despite assumptions about its decline.
